Scenes We Love ~ No 2

by Madelynne Ellis

I love Labyrinth, I mean what is there not to like. It has everything, Bowie, magic, goblins, Bowie, talking worms, mazes, trippyness more Bowie... You get the idea, right?

Jareth is a seriously cool bit of hot stuff. He's pretty. He's cruel, but you know, ultimately, he just wants to be loved :-) You've gotta appreciate that in a villain.

I will confess that this isn't actually my favourite scene from the film. That'd be the ballroom scene (adore that coat), but this one perhaps provokes a stronger reaction.

Of course in my version, she says: "Sod the baby, and could you please just repeat that bit about you being my slave again."

Anyone else a Jareth fan?

I do love Labyrinth, to the extent that we finally attended Labyrinth of Jareth masquerade ball this summer!

We also saw it on the big screen again last year, sitting directly behind Toby Froud--and it was his first time seeing it on the big screen! We got to meet Brian and Wendy afterwards and I got my picture taken with them and my Labyrinth DVD signed by all three. :-)

Other pertinent links for Labyrinth fans:

* David Bowie's Area website

* great analysis/review (including discussion of the giant vulva on the castle. Seriously. Once you know it's there, you can't look away...)

David's area one is hiliarious. While it doesn't have the same impact as the movie, they did get some of Bowie's attitude in the magna sequel I read earlier this year.

Great movie though, I like the singing the most but I have the soundtrack on my mp3 player.

And he... plays with his balls very well. :D

I'm afraid I've never seen this movie! But it looks interesting... definitely one for my LoveFilm.com list. :)

You haven't seen Labyrinth! YOU HAVEN'T SEEN LABYRINTH! Where've you been hiding, woman?

Just fear me, love me, do what I say - and I will be your slave.

I LOVE Labyrinth Madelynne!! Filled with incredible ideas and sly humour and unexpected depths and teenaged eroticism, it is my favourite film of all time, without exception, and this scene just makes my hair stand up and my bones turn to jelly. This is a children's movie for heaven's sake! - isn't that dialogue just extraordinary?

There are loads of 'classic' type movies I've never seen. Sometimes, out of sheer bloody minded cussedness, I make a concerted effort *not* to see things that other people rave about.

I may make an exception for Labyrinth though... ;)

Here's the music video for the wonderful Underground - complete with tentacles and goblins.

And if you fancy the experience of entering the Labyrinth yourself, there's always The Forbidden Corner if you visit North Yorkshire - a Puzzle Garden full of underground grottos, tricks, traps, mazes, statues, riddles and confusion. Utterly surreal and highly recommended.

Um - I sort of missed Labyrinth too. Talk about putting the amp back in camp...

Now, Olivia, I'm surprised, considering how into fairy tales you are...

Janine - I do not believe of one moment that this is a kids film. Kids might watch and enjoy it, but there are way too many adult/sexual undercurrents for it to really considered made for kids.

The dialogue is great throughout, but I'm particularly enamoured of the insult: 'Your mother is a stinking aardvark!'

It's the hair, I think (she said regretfully). I love fairy tales, but I have difficulty swallowing a mullet. The hairballs, for a start. I think if I'd watched this as a child or when it came out, reliving that would be no problem. (Like The Dark Crystal which I did see as a child, and which I will defend with my dying breath, which would otherwise only be wasted on something like "arglebarglebleuak".) Or possibly, from that snippet, stoned. That might help ;-)

Dives for cover as the stones began to sail through the air

Hmmm...I never saw this film either even though I'm totally in love with David Bowie. I was living in Germany at the time and they dub most foreign films in German, so I didn't go much to the cinema.

I think I'll have to rectify that. I just love his voice, could listen to him talk for hours.

I'm coming round your house with a DVD, a coil of rope and a mullet frightwig, Olivia.

I'll bring the goblins!

Damn! - my sound isn't working on this computer.

HUGE Labyrinth fan here. Fell in love with Bowie the first time I saw it, and HATED Jennifer Connelly. I remember when I got it on DVD. I watched it every day for a week.

Hubby started to be a little concerned about my mental state...

And I'm with t'sade on this - he does play very well with his balls.

I always thought the better deal would be that she'd agree to stay with him if he returned the baby to her parents. That way both sides get what they want. He gets the girl, the parents get their son, and she gets la..... Um, I didn't almost say that, really I didn't. I'm a good girl who never thinks about such icky things. Honest.

Have to admit I missed this one too.
Ouch! I am a big time Bowie fan though so now that I know he's in it I'll have to have a good look. Thanks Madelynne.

I saw it a long time ago but didn't get the same 'frizzle'-I wonder why? I'll have to watch it again now :)

That's Goblin War Mullet to you, missy! Fear it!

We got to see The Dark Crystal on the big screen again earlier this year, too. I love the Skekses...
